The Adopt-A-Precinct (AAP) program is a public/private partnership between State of Florida County government and various community service organizations. Each participating organization “adopts” a local precinct for the election cycle by recruiting and providing staff to work with the county's election board, and organizations are paid for their participation. The entire operation is a win-win: The county election board gets professional, dedicated poll watchers, the organizations get an opportunity to give back to their community as well as a unique fund-raising opportunity. But, perhaps, the biggest winners are Florida voters!
As community service is a key component of the Sophisticated Gents organization, we participate in the AAP program. Annually approximately 15 Gents participate in 3 days of training and subsequently serve as poll workers at the Colony Recreation Center polling location in The Villages. Staffing is provided from 5:30 AM - 8:00 PM during both the Primary and General elections. Responsibilities included greeting voters, validating voter identification and directing voters to booths to cast their ballots.
We intend to participate in the AAP program whenever it is conducted. Poll workers must be registered to vote in Sumter County and be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 13-14 hours a day).
Signup announcement's will be forthcoming. Interested Gents may contact The Program Chair Alan Johnathan for further information.
Local organizations stepped forward to raise money and help the Sumter County Supervisor of Elections Office. The program allows groups to staff a voting site, but instead of keeping their wages, the money earned goes to charities.
